Tips for IELTS writing Task 1 (General Test)

In: IELTS By: Trilok Chander Kapri

A letter is divided into three major parts:

(a) Introduction
(b) Body of the letter
(c) Closing (Conclusion)

Where the introductory paragraph includes:
(i) Greeting
(ii) Who you are?
(iii) Purpose of writing the letter

Greeting: Before you start your letter, you must write the salutation, which is often known as greeting. Dear Sir/ Madam or in case of an informal letter Dear (name). After greeting comes

Who you are: Here you need to remember that it is not your introduction where you would introduce yourself. You need to tell who you are for the addressee. Because you would be different to different people. For an instance, if you are writing a letter to your employer you would introduce yourself as ‘an employee’ but if you are writing to your ex-principal you would be an ex-student for him.

Purpose of writing – It is very important to mention the purpose of writing the letter in the introductory paragraph only. Many candidates do not mention the purpose in the introductory paragraph and loose marks.

Note: - Introductory paragraph should be brief and crisp.

In major body part you need to cover the three mentioned point in your question which depends on the “Scenario” you have been given. There are 4 types of letters in IELTS test:

(a) Complaint/Request letter

(b) Formal business letter

(c) Job application letter

(d) Personal letter

Note: Do not copy any part of the question in your answer.

In the end of your letter end it properly with suitable sentence. For example, in letter of request say ‘Looking for an early and positive response’ and end your letter.

Your sincerely/ faithfully
