Surely not a good companion for Speaking in IELTS

In: IELTS By: Pallavi Jadhav

The Hmm’s & the Ahhh’s & the Ummm’s & the ehhh’s… Surely not a good companion for Speaking
‘Fillers’ is what we call them, and consciously or no; we do use them. These are the sounds or words that are spoken in conversation by one participant to signal to others that he/she has paused to think but has not yet finished speaking. To some extent they do make us sound more human rather than a Robot, also using two or three of them are not fatal but as we know “Over” use of something might be harmful, and it does hold true for the fillers as well. These Sounds if used regularly can lead to lack of attention in your partner of conversation, thus putting an effect on your speech along with your credibility and you would be portrayed as a person who lacks confidence. If you think it holds true for you, you may want to follow the given instructions,
1) Be conscious of what you speak: Observing your speech can be the first step in the process, which will start with detecting the number of fillers while speaking and a good way to do that is recording your own speech.
2) Rehearsing: You might feel as If you’re back in your school days but don’t be afraid as it will give a flash of performance in the future.
3) Breath while you speak: slowing down your pace does not only help you analyze what you speak but it also gives the listener a chance to grasp what you are saying.
‘Practice makes a man perfect’, so practice, analyze yourself and be patient as results cannot be achieved at the speed of light.
